10 Fall Windowsill Decor Ideas

Windowsills are free shelf space I ignored for years. Now they are some of my favorite fall spots in the house. These ten ideas work on any sill, wide or narrow.

1. Line up mini pumpkins

A row of mini pumpkins along the sill is the simplest fall look. I mix white, orange, and green ones. They catch the daylight beautifully. Start here if you do nothing else.

2. Set candles in glass jars

Glass jars with tea lights line my kitchen sill. The glass protects the flame and glows at night. I use jars I already own. Evening windows look lovely from outside too.

3. Stand a vase of dried leaves

A small vase of dried maple leaves or wheat stands on the living room sill. It adds height without blocking light. Dried stems last for months. Nature does the styling for you.

4. Cluster small gourds

Odd-shaped gourds grouped in threes look like art. I cluster them at one end of the sill. The weird shapes are the point. Three is the magic number for groupings.

5. Drape a string of fairy lights

Tiny warm lights strung along the sill glow after dark. I run them on a timer from dusk to bedtime. They make the whole room feel cozy. Lights are the fastest mood change.

6. Fill apothecary jars with pinecones

Two glass jars of pinecones sit on my bedroom sill. The jars keep things tidy and show off the texture. I collected the pinecones on a walk, so they carry a memory. Decor with a story is my favorite kind.

7. Pot up kitchen herbs

Small pots of rosemary and thyme live on the kitchen sill. They get the light they need and I snip them for cooking. Useful and pretty is my favorite combination. The smell when you brush past is a bonus.

8. Lean a small framed print

A small fall print in a frame leans against the window. Mine is a simple pumpkin sketch. It layers nicely behind the pumpkins. Art on a sill feels unexpected and charming.

9. Place one lantern

A single lantern on a wide sill anchors the whole arrangement. I put a battery candle inside. It is the tallest piece, so it goes at one end. One strong piece beats five small ones.

10. Stack two books with a candle on top

Two books stacked flat with a candle on top add height and personality. I use books with fall-colored covers. The stack fills an awkward wide spot. Books make any sill look thoughtful.

Conclusion

Windowsills are small stages with great lighting. A few pumpkins, a candle, and something natural is all they need. Look at your sills today with fresh eyes.
