Diwali is my favorite time of year. The festival of lights turns every home into something magical, and I love decorating for it. These are the ideas I use every year to make my home glow for Diwali.
1. Line Your Home With Diyas
Diyas are the heart of Diwali decor. I place small clay diyas along my windowsills, on the stairs, and around the front door. When they are all lit in the evening, the whole house glows. It is the most beautiful sight.
Soak new clay diyas in water for a few hours before using them. They will burn longer and the oil will not seep through.

2. Create a Rangoli at the Entrance
A rangoli at the front door welcomes guests and goddess Lakshmi. I make mine with colored powders in a simple flower pattern. Even a small rangoli makes the entrance feel festive.
If powders feel messy, use flower petals instead. Marigold petals make a stunning rangoli and smell wonderful too.

3. Hang Fairy Lights Everywhere
Fairy lights make everything feel like a celebration. I drape them along my balcony railing, around door frames, and across the living room wall. The tiny lights twinkle like stars indoors.
Warm white lights look the most festive. They give that golden glow that makes Diwali feel magical.
4. Decorate With Marigold Garlands
Marigold garlands are the flowers of Diwali. I hang them over my doorways and drape them along the mantel. The bright orange and yellow colors instantly say festival.
Fresh marigolds last several days if you mist them lightly. Their color stays vibrant through the whole celebration.
5. Set Up a Puja Corner
I create a special corner for Lakshmi Puja with a clean cloth, the idols, flowers, and diyas. Decorating this corner beautifully is the most meaningful part of my Diwali prep. It becomes the spiritual center of the home.
Keep this area clean and uncluttered. The simplicity lets the decorations and the devotion shine.
6. Use Colorful Cushion Covers
Swapping cushion covers is the fastest Diwali makeover. I bring out covers in rich jewel tones, deep reds, royal blues, and golds. The living room looks festive in minutes.
Silk or satin fabrics catch the light beautifully. The shimmer adds to the celebratory feeling.
7. Fill Bowls With Floating Flowers and Diyas
A wide bowl of water with floating flowers and a small diya is pure Diwali magic. I place these bowls on my dining table and in the entryway. Guests always stop to admire them.
Use a shallow, wide bowl so the flowers spread out. Marigolds and rose petals float beautifully.

8. Light Scented Candles
Along with diyas, I place scented candles around the house. Sandalwood and jasmine scents feel perfect for Diwali. The fragrance greets every guest who walks in.
Group candles in odd numbers for the prettiest look. Three candles of different heights make a lovely cluster.
9. Hang Torans on Every Door
Torans, the decorative door hangings, welcome prosperity into the home. I hang a mango leaf toran on my main door and smaller ones on bedroom doors. Every doorway feels blessed.
You can make a simple toran with fresh mango leaves strung together. It is traditional and smells fresh and green.
10. Serve Sweets on a Decorated Tray
Presentation matters during Diwali. I arrange homemade sweets on a silver tray lined with a decorative cloth and marigold flowers. Offering sweets this way makes the moment feel special.
The tray becomes part of the decor. Place it where guests gather so everyone can enjoy.
Conclusion
Diwali decorating is about light, color, and warmth. Diyas glowing, marigolds bright, and the whole home feeling alive. However you decorate, do it with love and your home will shine.
