I love decorating my home for fall, but I also think it is very easy to go a little too far. There are so many cute pumpkins, candles, pillows, signs, and other fall decorations that sometimes we just want to buy everything.
But more decor does not always mean a better-looking home. Sometimes, keeping things simple looks much nicer. Here are a few fall decorating mistakes I would try to avoid.
1. Too Many Pumpkins
Pumpkins are probably the easiest fall decoration to find. I love them too, but you really do not need them everywhere.
If you have pumpkins on the coffee table, shelves, dining table, kitchen counter, and bedroom, it can start looking like a pumpkin shop.
I would choose a few pumpkins I really like and place them in different areas. That is enough to give the home a fall feel.
2. Using Too Many Colors
Fall has so many pretty colors, but you do not have to use all of them together.
Too much orange, red, yellow, brown, and green in one room can make it look very busy.
I would pick two or three colors and keep the rest of the room simple. Cream, brown, and a little orange can look really cozy together.
3. Decorating Every Corner
You do not have to decorate every empty shelf or table.
Sometimes we see an empty space and immediately think, “I need to put something there.” But leaving some spaces empty can actually make the room look better.
I would rather have a few nice decorations that stand out than lots of small things everywhere.
4. Mixing Too Many Styles
This can happen without even realizing it. You buy one rustic pumpkin, then a modern vase, then a farmhouse sign, and suddenly nothing really goes together.
I would try to choose decorations that match the style of my home.
If your home is simple and modern, keep your fall decorations simple too. If you love a more rustic look, wooden and natural pieces can work really well.
5. Too Many Fall Signs
Fall signs can be cute, but you really do not need one in every room.
A few signs with big fall quotes can quickly make a home look over-decorated.
If you really like them, choose one that you love and give it a nice spot. You can also use simple artwork instead.
6. Forgetting About Your Existing Decor
You do not need to change everything just because fall has arrived.
Before buying new things, look around your home. Think about the colors and decorations you already have.
For example, if your room is mostly cream and beige, you can simply add some brown, rust, or warm wood. It will still feel like fall without looking completely different.
7. Making Everything Match
I used to think everything had to match, but honestly, it can look better when things are a little different.
You can mix wood with ceramic, soft fabrics with baskets, or different shades of the same color.
The room does not have to look perfect. A little mix can actually make it feel more natural and lived-in.
8. Using Too Much Fake Foliage
Fake leaves and branches can look really nice, especially in a vase. But using them everywhere can be too much.
Instead of covering a whole table with fake leaves, I would put a few branches in a simple vase.
You can also use dried flowers or real branches if you have some available. Sometimes the simplest option looks the best.
9. Choosing Decorations That Are Too Big
Always think about the size of your room before buying something.
A huge fall arrangement might look great in a big store, but it can take over a small table at home.
I would rather use one or two pieces that fit the space properly. They will look much more natural.
10. Buying Too Much Fall Decor
This is probably the easiest mistake to make.
Every year there are new fall decorations, and everything looks cute. But you do not really need to buy a whole new collection every year.
I like choosing things that I can use even after fall. A simple vase, basket, wooden tray, lamp, or neutral pillow can work all year.
Then I can just add a few small fall pieces when the season comes around.
Keep Your Fall Decor Simple
You really do not need to turn your whole home orange to make it feel like fall.
A few warm colors, some soft textures, natural pieces, and cozy lighting can be enough. I think fall decor looks best when it feels like a part of your home instead of looking like you decorated every inch just for the season.
So before adding another pumpkin to your shopping cart, look around your home first. You might already have everything you need.
